How To: Rocking Denim Trends

Walking into H&M, Zara and Mango this week, I noticed the large palette of new and very different denim collections. A constant and trusted staple in many wardrobes, denim has long endured various trends, from the denim shirt to the denim jumper. This season, we’re seeing models walk the runway in different denim designs, making denim not only a staple but an accessory to anyone’s closet.

Fall 2012 lines have boasted designs from the baroque era, a period of artistic style using easily interpreted details and clear, exaggerated designs to produce drama and luxe. Such is the brocade denim, a pattern easily seen on home décor, such as curtains, rugs and now – denim? This versatile, easy to wear trend has a lot more movement than you think – you just have to pick the right fabric. The print resembles floral patterns, and incorporates a combination of colors ranging from oxblood and black or gold and black. These rich hues exude drama and luxe, typical of the baroque era. To wear the brocade denim, pair this trend with a plain tee/sweater and loafers or add to its drama by throwing a faux fur vest over your outfit.

Interested in leather pants, but unwilling to pay the often-high price tag that is attached? Look no further than the coated denim, which looks like leather, but feels like denim. Also known as waxed denim, pay attention to the weight, color and cut of the denim – this can mean the difference between feeling like a stiff statue and walking around comfortably in your jean!  Below are three different takes of the coated denim, for every style and personality. Adding a tailored blazer, printed loafers and a pop of color with the burgundy hat gives the first look a very retro-preppy vibe. Go rocker-chic with black booties, a leather jacket and a color-blocked shirt with your coated denim, or step out to brunch in your coated denim with sneakers, a plain tee and an oversized blazer.

The patterned and printed denim has been around for quite some time, but is still popular on the shelves of J Brand, Current/Elliot and Zara, alike. From floral prints to leopard patterns, the beauty of the patterned and printed denim is that you don’t need much to accessorize – the printed denim should serve as your accessory! Below, we see four stars pairing their printed denim with plain tops/blouses, which is the best way to rock this party jean. Add a loose grey sweater with flats and a straw hat for a simple, clean look or play with color with a snake-skin print, a beige colored sweater and a black leather bomber. Keep your accessories as simple as possible to allow the prints to stand out.

It’s hard to tell which denim trend will be a style fad and which will actually stick around. If you’re unsure about rocking any of the above denim trends, the best thing to do is to shop for them at one of your mass retailers, such as Forever21 and H&M. These stores are known for providing the latest style in more affordable prices. Or you can go bold and purchase these pieces at your specialty retailers, like Rag and Bone or Theory. Whichever the case, let us know where and how you would rock any of the denim trends at @SuperGlamNews!
