DIY Egg and Olive Oil Hair Treatment

At home hair mask recipes have been all over Pinterest lately, and most of them are made with things you probably already have in your kitchen. There are masks made out of mayonnaise, honey, avocado, coconuts, basically everything.

I wanted to try one because my hair is long, color treated and heat damaged, and my deep conditioner is just not doing the trick. I made a concoction of eggs and olive oil, which are supposed to hydrate your scalp and make your hair soft and healthy. There are a lot of variations of the recipe online because some people say to use the yolk only, some say to use the whites only, some people leave it on for different amounts of time, etc., but here is what I did:

I mixed two eggs (whites and yolks) with four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. It doesn't have to be virgin; that's just what I had. If your hair is short, you may be able to cut those amounts in half.

So I put the slimy mixture all over my hair, concentrating on the ends, and then put a shower cap over it for about half an hour. The application made a huge mess, so I would recommend standing in the shower for that part, and I wore a bathing suit top. It definitely got all over me and my bathroom. Also, the websites I read all recommended different times from ten minutes up to an hour, so I just left it on until I felt like it had been long enough. When you rinse, it is very important to use cool water! If you rinse the egg out with hot water, it will start to cook. You don't want scrambled eggs in your hair.

After that ordeal, my hair is soft and silky and shiny like I just left the salon. The results are definitely worth the trouble of touching gooey raw eggs, and the best part is that I didn't have to spend any money. I will definitely be trying some more of those DIY treatments in the future.
