Affordable Eco-Friendly Brands
The term "eco-friendly" has been frequently used interchangeably with the terms "sustainable" and "organic", leaving consumers wondering about the difference between each definition. The presence of these words itself indicate a more progressive, fashion-forward industry, one which welcomes the eco movement. However, as the presence of these words increase, so do the number of retailers and marketers who label their brands and materials as such. As a result, (and partially due to the scarcity of brands labeled as eco-friendly, sustainable or organic in the industry), prices can be marked sky-high and can often surpass that of retailers and brands who don't identify themselves as such. There are, however, brands that are environmentally friendly and affordable - a duo often thought to be an impossible feat. Read below for three brands doing their part to provide an environmentally friendly, fashion forward as well as affordable sale - all in the name of ethical style.
Brand: Amour Vert
Philosophy: A mix of Parisian chic as well as California's relaxed style, the founders of Amour Vert are firm believers of meeting the goal of providing sustainable fashion (through organic fabrics and low-impact dyes) through their classic, glamorous and feminine pieces.
Key piece: This Milla Front Overlap Dress in Tangerine exemplifies Amour Vert's mission as well as style. The simplicity of this halter dress is balanced out by the bold, eye-popping color of tangerine. Delicately pair with neutrals - a nude sandal and maroon or burgundy clutch complement this vibrant Spring color best.
Price points: $38 - $189
Philosophy: Elroy's belief in the story behind clothing initiated a grassroots, sewing cooperative in Indonesia, using recycled materials from the clothing maker's very own backyard. Additionally, skills are taught and shared, enabling not only the growth of an economy within a community, but using human capital as a key resource in sustainability.
Key piece: From Elroy's Fall 2012 collection, over-sized sweaters, jewel tones and warmth seemed to be the common theme. This Ponthos sweater dress shown above is reminiscent of many designers' RTW collections. Its bold prints and edge allow you to take this sweater from Fall to Spring.
Price points: $35 - $165
Brand: Mountains of the Moon
Philosophy: Low impact dyes, 100% sweatshop-free facilities, eco-friendly fabrics (such as hemp, organic cotton and tencel) and reusing packaged materials are all ways in which Mountains of the Moon demonstrate its commitment to sustainability.
Key piece: Mountains of the Moon prides itself in its vintage-inspired, yet modern pieces. Its classic silhouettes provide the perfect fit for the modern woman while its vintage detailing sets it apart from the rest of the eco-friendly crowd. The Ellie Skirt shown above is mad of hemp/tencel and features an A-line cut as well as rows of tiered pleats. Pair with a bright printed top for a retro-chic feel.
