A Lesson on Collagen
When you hear the word collagen the mind usually thinks lip injections. Which makes sense since collagen injections are so popular in that area. But have you ever though about what exactly it is? What is Collagen?
eOur skin is made up of mainly three things: elastin, glycosaminoglycans and collagen. Collagen is a protein that makes up 80% of our skin. While elastin helps our skin stretch and its flexibility; collagen is what gives it its strength. As we age our skin produces less collagen, and sun damage plays a huge role in this. Damage from the sun prevents our skin from producing more collagen. Further down the road the lack of collagen causes the skin's appearance to age quicker.
The reason collagen is injected into the lips is to create a fuller look. If you weren't born with Angelina Jolie lips this would probably sound appealing. Aging also causes the fullness of our lips to decrease. Collagen injections give volume and plump up your lips.
Where there's an injection involved chances are there will be side-effects. Things you can expect afterwards are: swelling, redness, irritation, bleeding and pain. While some say this is a safe procedure you should always do your research and seek out a doctor with proper training and experience in this area.
